These shoes are not just meant for walking
In the middle of the Mohave Desert, there is a spot along the highway where it is tradition for local high school students to decorate this specific fence with shoes of all sorts. There are hundreds of pairs of shoes strung together all around this fence and the surrounding area; the shoes are of all brands, styles and ages. It is remarkable to date the presence of this tradition based on the weathering of the shoes and the styles based on fashions that have developed throughout the years.
Some students added other items to this fence, such as articles of clothing and boards for people to mark their presence at this site. Freedom of expression is encouraged here, as well as transforming the space with the “misplacement” of the shoes, such as moving the original placement to a different location on the fence. Some might even switch out their pair of shoes with shoes on the fence; this practice is intriguing in that you are actually “taking a walk in someone else’s shoes.”
